Climate Chess: Strategic Moves for a Sustainable Future
I am a fan of chess. I love how each piece has its own strengths and, when they work together, they can avoid being checkmated by the opponent. The key to achieving this? Be strategic with every move. Just like in chess, our fight against climate change requires each player to understand their role and make calculated decisions.
Everyone — the private sector, government, academia, media, civil society organizations, and citizens — has a crucial role to play. Each piece is vital in this game, and we must all contribute to the collective effort.
The urgency of this effort becomes clear when considering a United Nations report stating that the world is already 1.1° C (1.9° F) hotter than during the pre-industrial era (1850–1900). Limiting warming to 1.5° C will be challenging, but it’s necessary to prevent disastrous consequences.
Recognizing this, 196 countries signed the Paris Agreement in 2015. This unprecedented plan aims to keep global warming well below 2° C (3.6° F), ideally to 1.5° C. Building on decades of international efforts, world leaders must collaborate to eliminate heat-trapping carbon emissions by 2050, requiring stronger commitments to cut emissions over time.
However, just as a chess game requires cooperation among all pieces, governments cannot solve climate change alone. We need collaboration across regional governments, businesses, and communities to make meaningful progress.
The stakes are high. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, failing to limit warming could result in:
- Sea levels rising by 2100, impacting 1 billion people by 2050.
- Coral reefs facing severe degradation by 2100.
- Arctic sea ice receding every summer.
- More frequent heat waves.
- Increased frequency and intensity of precipitation events, like heavy rainfall and snowfall.
- Loss of more than half of plant and animal species.
Human activities are the principal cause of greenhouse gas emissions, but we also have the power to change the outcome of this game. By making strategic moves, we can shift the narrative and improve our chances of success.
We can advocate for a just transition to renewable energy, urge our government leaders to promote the electrification of cars and trucks and expand public transportation. Moreover, supporting locally grown food is another way we can contribute.
On an individual level, everyone has a role to play in this game. Many green jobs are available in the market. If you have a talent for writing, you can inspire people to shift to more eco-friendly products. If you are a leader in your organization, you can mobilize others to reduce their emissions. As an entrepreneur, you can focus on making your products more sustainable.
