Digital technology is a double-edged sword. It can either harm us or help us.

With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, digital technology continues to play a vital role in our everyday lives. What used to be a part of our leisure time a few years back became the sole platform to attend our online classes, do work, socialize with friends from afar, and many more. Many people believe that this will be our set-up for a few more years.

As they say, digital technology is a double-edged sword. It can either harm us or help us.

Therefore, it’s really important that we are being mindful of how we can use digital technology for the greater good.

Have you ever experienced attending your class in Google Meet while also lurking in the social media account of your favorite KDrama actors? Have you attended a Zoom meeting for a project you’re working on while also mindlessly browsing the internet searching for your next Netflix show to watch later?

With so many distractions nowadays, how can we find balance in the digital world where are in? How can we focus and stay goal-driven? Here are some strategies that can help you:

  1. Be mindful of how you spend your time. Keep track of how you spend your morning, afternoon, and evening.
  2. Stop spending too much time on social media. Try installing the News Feed Eradicator browser extension. Delete your social media apps in your phone so you don’t access them intentionally or unintentionally whenever you have free time.
  3. Schedule your ‘deep work’. Multitasking does more harm than good. A 2-hour focused time is better than 6–8 hours doing the same thing with divided attention.
  4. Schedule your distraction time. Dedicate time to watch your favorite shows or vloggers. Strictly follow the schedule.
  5. Do more non-digital activities. Try meditating, doing calligraphy, or reading physical books you have at home. Aside from trying new things, these activities help rest your mind and eyes.

At the end of the day, we can still strike a balance while living in the digital world. We just need to be extra-mindful and careful on how we can use our 24 hours in a day.
